Who We Are
Since its inception more than 140 years ago, Family Service Society of Yonkers has been a beacon of hope for the most vulnerable among us in Yonkers and Westchester County by providing a broad range of programs and services, focusing on diverse family supports, guardianship, education, and advocacy for individuals and families, which will enhance their quality of life.
FSSY is a leader in providing academic support programs and licensed after school child care 100% free-of-charge, as well as intergenerational volunteering opportunities in Westchester. Every year, these programs impact the lives of thousands of children and families and hundreds of older adults in Yonkers and across Westchester County through academic and social-emotional skill-building in under-resourced public schools, healthy aging, and enhancing intergenerational, ethnic, and cultural understanding and acceptance.
Our Kinship Support Program serves as a lifeline for grandparents and other non-parent relatives raising children whose parents are absent due to abuse, neglect, incarceration, and other circumstances. We provide kinship caregivers, most of who are moderate- to low-income women 55 years old and older, with case management and mental health support. We also assist kinship families with material needs, finding affordable housing, applying for benefits, and holiday and summer programs for families and kinship youth. All of these services help kinship caregivers to establish healthy, safe, and nurturing homes.
FSSY provides permanent supportive housing for homeless individuals with disabilities through referrals from the County’s Department of Social Services and the Hudson Valley Care Coalition.
For people who live in Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers (MHACY) buildings, Section 8 housing, and other affordable housing in Yonkers, we provide a vast array of essential services designed to improve the quality of their lives. These services include but are not limited to case management, referrals to social services, help with rent arrears and entitlements, health care, mental health support, and community strengthening activities.
FSSY is Westchester’s only community-based nonprofit appointed by the New York State Supreme Court to act as legal guardian for incapacitated adults at risk of neglect, abuse and/or financial exploitation. We also provide support for families of incapacitated adults who need to petition for Guardianship for their loved ones.
In October 2024, FSSY entered into an affiliation agreement with Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS), a non-sectarian, not-for-profit founded in 1943 whose mission is to help people of all ages and backgrounds cope with emotional, cognitive, environmental, physical, interpersonal, social, and education challenges. Through this affiliation, WJCS and FSSY will deliver a comprehensive and coordinated range of human services that will better support youth, the elderly, and families in Yonkers and the broader Westchester community.
Board of Directors
Message from Thomas J. McSpedon,
President of the FSSY Board of Directors
On behalf of Family Service Society of Yonkers, thank you for taking the time to learn more about who we are and what we do to improve our communities in Westchester County and beyond.
FSSY has a proud tradition of serving families and individuals who turn to us in need. In recent years, FSSY has experienced tremendous growth as we have expanded our many programs and services beyond Yonkers and into other areas of Westchester County and the Bronx.
Whether it is a grandmother suddenly faced with being the primary caregiver to her grandchildren, or a 3rd grader from a low-income, immigrant family who is struggling with reading, we step in and help. We are privileged to work collaboratively with other local, county and state agencies and private foundations who help us respond to so many critical needs. Our goal today is the same as it was when our doors opened in 1883: to enhance the quality of life for vulnerable families and individuals, young and old, by providing services in education, housing, guardianship, kinship, and more, thus cultivating healthy, safe and thriving communities.
